Confused? Because till now you’d only heard of the crazy cat lady? Well, in this age of mosquitoes, the trusty mosquito bat can often be the only thing standing between one’s skin and the piercing rapier of the mosquito’s sting.

Here’s how it works: “A mosquito bat converts low-voltage power from a built-in rechargeable battery into a brief, high-voltage electric charge that instantly kills insects on contact” and good riddance I say!

However the optics behind it are a different ballgame altogether. Imagine an evening, muggy or breezy; take your pick. The sun is setting over half-built skyscrapers in the distance. The din of the traffic can be heard over the sounds of kids yelling at each other in the park. In the midst of this urbania, comes the sound of quick zap. ZZZPHUT! Followed by another, and another till it ceases.

Often the zaps are spaced out, one or two every few minutes and at other times, it’s like fireworks on Diwali minus the sulphur and smoke.

There is an issue with the bat that has to do with optics. While you wield it, you can look like a guard wanding people at the airport, a traffic controller or even a paranoid schizophrenic attacking enemies which are invisible to everyone else.

Be as that may, the bat is slowly becoming a must. Even if it’s just a placebo because there will always be more mosquitoes than bats. There will also be a time when the bat runs out of juice, will have to be recharged and the mosquitoes will attack in full strength once again.

But, for now, the snap, crackle and sizzle as a mosquito meets its maker and floats down to the insect hell they rightly belong to, is music to my ears…oh wait…it’s just another mosquito singing its annoying song.

Take that.. ZZZPHUT!!!
