• Red

That’s how I refer to my husband in digital media- Facebook, blogs, and in my phonebook. I don’t know how or why it started but it did. He’s not red at all- no communist tendencies lurking here and there neither does he have one red hair. He’s been a salt&pepper guy since we met nearly 9 years ago. He’s pretty young still, just hit mid 30s and is quite an interesting person. I mean I keep thinking about him so clearly his mystique hasn’t died down after 7 years of marriage and one preschooler.

Let me break it down for you- he’s quieter than I am and less likely to go and start off conversations with strangers but it’s taken me a few years to understand that he’s not entirely introverted. He’s more of what you call an ambivert- he’d like to socialize more, is capable of it but is choosy and would rather hold off on commenting or jumping head long into things till he’s more comfortable. Sensible to the core but can stumble onto domestic minefields with unfailing regularity. Or maybe that’s just him being a husband :)

We are quite different from each other in many ways- am round and short with the increasing roundness seeming to increase the lack of verticality and he’s slender and well taller than I am. I can and often do talk nineteen to a dozen and he talks when he wants to, precisely, doesn’t meander and doesn’t keep talking beyond a point. Quite well moderated in his ways. Extremely well moderated in leaving wet towels on the bed and leaving lights on irrespective of having exited a room or a bathroom but those are quirks ( to use the best possible euphemism).

He’s pretty smart too. But kind of a binary guy. Focused on child, work, home (in that exact order) and a very sweet person overall.

Now comes the big question- WHY am I extolling my husband’s good qualities without any provocation whatsoever first thing on a Sunday morning? Well…he and the brat are both asleep. Peacefully. And seeing them knocked out like that always induces a benevolence in me that usually starts dissipating soon after they both wake up. And mainly because I’ve been grousing about MLM practically from my first post here and I thought it’s time to direct my attention towards another who causes my world to tilt here and there and spin haphazardly.

And most importantly, unless he’s away on work, he gives me my coffee every morning; made just right. You gotta love a man who gives you your dose of sanity everyday :)

P.S: A blog post detailing the annoying stuff about him is already in the works!

  • I read this blog post from a blogger I follow. He’s funny, his writing is very real and given that he has many more years of experience in the ephemeral field of parenting than I do; his posts make me feel more confident that all is not lost and my head may not explode…today at least.

When I was reading his latest post last night I realized that it was absolutely true in the context of my life. No matter how many times I’ve been at loggerheads with my folks, looking them straight in the eye and telling them off was never an option at all. Of course they aren’t the kind of parents who inspire that kind of disrespect but every child goes through the phase when the connection between them and their parents is at an all time low and you just can’t imagine that you are related at all.

And throughout my childhood until I left home, we did not piss my father off. We aren’t at all a patriarchal-sort of family but the idea of facing that grim, disapproving look on his face and having that heavy cloud of discord hanging over our home gave me the heebie-jeebies as a kid and I didn’t relish it as an adult either.

But getting back to present day…MLM has no compunction saying “NO” to either his father or I. He has had some epic meltdowns in public to an extent where I avoided quite a few team lunches and other outings with friends and co-workers simply because I didn’t want the slightest opportunity of a trigger to be present. His main failing, if I may call it that, is that he knows very little fear or trepidation from the unknown. All kids reach for a hot iron, fall off from some place, get avoidable booboos but this child is almost blind to it all.

He is what I once called a “misguided missile” and that description stuck in my head ever since.

On a road trip with friends of ours, he charged at a herd of buffaloes grazing patiently simply because he wanted to be close enough to see them. That he has seen more buffaloes than he may care to in his life time probably did not occur to him and off he went! That they were bigger than him, had horns and hooves that could inflict pain did not occur to him and he just jetted off with glee on seeing them. Red ran after him and picked him up just in time. What did the child do about our admonishmen?t He laughed it off and ran after birds next.

As time goes by I find that whatever has taken his fancy at a particular moment is something that he becomes entirely engrossed in. One hundred percent. It becomes difficult for him to stop himself from doing or exploring whatever has fallen in his cross hairs. So much is his enthusiasm towards that particular activity that he develops blinkered vision and is immune (most of the times) to the surroundings which includes a yelling banshee of a mother.

While I debate the worthiness of his adventurous spirit vs that of a more cautious child, I can also appreciate the utter abandon with which he does things. There is not one iota of any artifice or anything calculated in his enjoyment. One might say he was truly a free spirit. And one might say it when one has no has no other option but to view her life as a glass that’s half full because while you don’t always like your kids you do pretty much always love them. I mean how else would you explain that your child while cozying up to you invokes his innate goat and chews on your sleeves or collar? Mother love is an all encompassing, incomprehensible, (un)avoidable thing.

If only parenting was on time share basis….

  • MLM got acquainted with the telly pretty early in life. He used to have frequent bouts of cold and cough and feeding him would be a nightmare…dragged out for hours on end with precious little going down the gullet. Also there were the days when nebulization was de rigueur. The television would captivate his attention long enough for us to feed him and nebulize him. It was a godsend. But television is also a double-edged sword…it does stunt your child’s growth by keeping him sedentary for long periods and not give them opportunities for two-way communication.

But necessary evil that it is there are still those shows that this child has been positively influenced by. He learns about the environment and the animals by watching Animal Planet and Discovery Channel. He learns about acceptable behavior from Noddy, Oswald the October (sappy as hell as it may be) and problem solving from Maya the Bee. The artistic side or the creative side was tweaked by I Can Cook and Mister Maker.

So while I do wish that he didn’t have as much affection for the idiot box and preferred to spend more time outdoors, the fact of the matter is that he  is learning from the t.v. His vocabulary is growing…he mimics a lot of things he hears on the television, he affects new physical mannerisms and does get a glimpse of the world beyond his immediate surroundings through it.

So what’s the ultimate downside you might ask? I have to record everything I want to watch since the t.v. is entirely his domain :p

    Phooey!

  • The toughest thing I find at times is to explain to MLM what something actually is. Since he lacks the experience and often the vocabulary, it’s a bit challenging to think of ways to get him to understand it in a manner that satisfies him or makes sense to him. Some children accept a lot of things their parents tell them but MLM actually mulls things over quite a bit.

Little things like why he can’t be swimming in an unheated pool in the height of winter, how it’ll most likely cause a cold; why his father and I are using chasing him around the house to clean his nose when it’s runny and most importantly why t.v or other visual digital media is curtailed after a point. Usually there’s a villain in the story  viz moi but by and large there are questions coming up which I have to gloss over or fall back on euphemisms for him to stop his line of questioning.

Just today he suddenly asked why Littlefoot’s mother was sleeping and not getting up after the fight with the T-Rex. Till now he’s never watched anything where death has even been remotely implied and since he’s only 4, I haven’t even thought about how to explain those kinds of heavy concepts to him yet. Whatever cartoons he’s watched where the bad guy’s been defeated, he’s understood it as them having “gone away”. Whether that’s a permanent condition or not has not been touched upon. Come to think of it, I don’t know if such small children know and understand the concept of permanence either. Their little minds are usually so crammed with things in their immediate surroundings, their likes and dislikes.

So when he raised the query about Littlefoot’s mother I asked him why do you think she’s not getting up and he promptly replied, ” T-Rex did ouchie! Dinosaur got ouchie there and fall down. Now dinosaur sleep.”  Phew! That’s a good place to start. I wouldn’t know what to do when the “die” issue comes up.

With children what they see is what you get and I guess that’s why he can’t understand how it is when I occasionally put my contact lens on…he keeps trying to get me to put my glasses on…thinking I’m unable to see :)

When he was a baby, he’d go and check under the beds, behind the toilets, everywhere possible when he wasn’t able to locate his grandparents after they’d left. He just couldn’t understand how something was *not* there or was different or in an unrecognizable form.

All a part of growing up I guess…I just hope I survive the phase of “whys”.

  • Red and I have always tried to use positive words rather than negative words when communicating things to MLM. Kids are like sponges and like mirrors…they’ll absorb everything and reflect them back on you…add boomerang to that list since they keep coming back no matter where you throw them. You *don’t* throw your kids? Pity….try it sometime…it’s cathartic!

Anyhoo…moving on from my not very maternal fantasies…we’ve been wondering how to get MLM out of his habit of saying NO to every damn thing that we ask him to do or not to do AND also his habit of justifying his actions by proclaiming- IT’s MINE!! Am tacking on only 2 exclamations…he adds a gazillion after his screeches.

The thing is…no matter how hard you try, it’s inevitable that the child hears NO from you on a fairly regular basis. If not NO then its loyal family of NOT, DON’T, STOP all hover inside our mouths just waiting to jump out and assault the child bent on doing things his own way.

Take today’s instance for example: MLM somehow got his hands on an extension cord that was happily wound up and kept out of reach- or so we thought. He unraveled the entire bit and dumped the rest onto his cycle carrier and was zooming around the house. I saw and asked him to stop knowing that the tangled cables would either mess up the bike or would cause a fall and a resulting ouchie; post which I’d have to kiss the aforementioned ouchie and tell the bike it had been very naughty for hurting MLM. Yup…my days are filled with fun things to do.

So the little man immediately acts like I’m the Gestapo and starts yelling IT’s MINE!! and NO! NO! NO! GIFF IT BACK!!! Seeing that the belligerence in my eyes hadn’t dimmed a bit he starts off on his impressions of a banshee (not a pretty sound especially on a day when I’ve been diagnosed with AOM) and just carries on till I box his ears and threaten to give the cycle away to the trash collector tomorrow morning.  Yes…we’re the threatening parents…rather I am…Red still tries to strike a balance…when that fails he calls me and I promptly come in and threaten.

The point is it shouldn’t be this hard…you shouldn’t have to be a bad cop for your kid to understand that you want them to be safe. But given that children much older than my boy have deliberately done dumber things, with more serious implications just goes to show you that kids really don’t listen. It’s not done with malice either. They just don’t know any better. And since you know better and try to stop them and end up cementing their intentions even more. But the alternative isn’t a pretty one at all…isn’t the most important part of being a parent is to keep your child safe? Not every experience is worth having when seen from a parent’ s viewpoint and in reality.

But till that glorious day comes when my child actually exhibits that he has brains and can use them appropriately, I guess we’ll be keeping company with the evil twins- Mr.NO & Mr. IT’s MINE.

I just hope their family doesn’t grow any more…I have very few weapons left in my arsenal :( The most effective of which continue to be Mr.Bedtime (for the child) and Mrs. Glass-0f-Wine ( for moi).

    Toodles!

  • Apparently one can’t just merrily honk away when ridding themselves of their vile phlegm.  Because you might end up with what I have- Acute Otitis Media. And it’s not a fun thing media or no media…for one, it’s acute and it hurts like a itch-bay and the feeling of a heaviness in your ear coupled with dimming of your hearing is nothing short of uncomfortable and a bit scary for a person like me who is already blind as a bat without her glasses.

So this is how it can (and did) happen( for moi)- I caught MLM’s cold and it was aggravated by the on-going construction in and around the apartment complex we live in. Initially I thought it was your garden variety cold and didn’t bother much with medication…I knew when MLM got better so would I…that is the natural progression of things. But since last night a crazy earache and all sorts of unwanted and uncomfortable sensations in my ear prompted me to visit our family ENT and he diagnosed it as AOM as a result of blowing my nose too enthusiastically :(

Gaah…there are rules for everything now…most vexing…so am on antihistamines and antibiotics and MLM thinks a reclining fat woman is tantamount to having his personal jungle gym and trampoline :/

But am glad I consulted the doctor rather than just brush off the symptoms are being non-important…I actually have become a bit of an alarmist over the years…I’ve had some amount of experience working in hospitals and there you can see the simplest of things turn serious and often fatal. It sometimes gets a bit tough to separate the wheat from the chaff as it were.

While Red and I don’t take any risks when it comes to our child, we generally ride out mini health issues via OTC meds or just a bit of R&R (which in my book is a panacea for all ills).

But today it was an eye opener for me…the doctor put a probe in my ear and showed me how much swelling there was inside and all because I tried to do what came naturally during a cold- blow my nose!

    That’ll teach me…

In the interim there are meds to be taken and sleepiness to be combated. Thank goodness I wasn’t asked to do a nasal lavage…that’d have torn it completely…I can see it now…MLML thinking am watering my nose a la the pots and plants on the balcony :p

    Stay healthy everyone!

  • The biggest source of joy for both Red and I in 2013 was MLM’s glee about his new school and newly discovered enthusiasm towards learning. Of course the child still has the attention span of a fly and looks at everything from the angle of fun but you’re a preschooler only once; thank goodness!

But there were things which gave me joy, cheer, a sense of contentment if you will…

On 30th December, Red got me a new car stereo. Why is that of any importance you ask? Well driving without music is not something I prefer to do and after MLM did this, I had to do with listening to music on my phone whilst driving and it’s never the same thing. And with all the work going into the new house, splurging for a car stereo just didn’t seem like a necessity. But Red wanted the woebegone look off my face and got me a brand new stereo and I’ve threatened MLM with dire consequences if he touches it. But just to ensure that he doesn’t laugh off my threats like he’s wont to do I think I’ll see if eBay or Amazon carry a watered down stun gun that I can zap with him if he tries to get his grubby fingers on it. NOT! But I can engage in improbable fantasies can’t I?

Moving on…discovered a new author whose works I love!! Am a bit late in jumping onto the Rick Riordan band wagon but boy am I glad I finally did! Percy Jackson and Carter Kane have got me through quite a few months in 2013.

My mood elevator was probably the silliest one for most people who know me...this song I heard while travelling in an auto (the loud and scratchy version though) made me hum and groove even on most crazy days. Needless to say both MLM and Red can’t stand it since I’ve had it looped for many a day and they’re fed up of it! But the reason this song really does it for me is because it’s silly, peppy and as memorable associations of a truly good time I some months back. Probably a one-off time by the looks of it but for that particular moment it was the cherry on my cupcake.

A get together of a few close friends from the erstwhile work place a few months back led to a massive round of charades replete with guffaws galore and some good, clean fun times.

The little things mattered a lot in 2013 since most of the things tackled in the past year were on a larger scale and not always easy to get a hang on…

But one thing is for sure…I’ll need a new song to groove on…tolerance levels of two disgruntled males only go so far in this house :p
