    21.08.2006

Just heard on the news that Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahab is no more.
Personally to me it didn’t make much of a dent because to me the shehenaai was the symbol of the sob moment in Hindi films.
But the actual impact hit me when I saw the look on my parents’ faces. They are not of his (Khan Sahab) generation but they have grown up in times when the classical players ruled the music scene of the country and with the number of people playing the shehenaai declining sharply, his death has truly signalled the end of an era.

I remember once my dad had come home from some tour and he was telling us how he’d met Khan Sahab at the airport and how humble he was. Stalwarts and doyen apart, he was the only one of his kind to be playing the shehenaai with that kind of skill anywhere in the world.
There was an article on him many years ago, about how he was living in penury and how patrons were no longer a fad that the country could afford to keep; so Khan Sahab had to fall back on government grants. The kind that the Indian government is famous for being late lateef about.

The only raag that I remember I would willingly listen to played on the shehenaai is malkauns. There is something in the sounds of the shehenaai that can render the raag haunting and with a character that is so enmeshed with Indian traditions and customs.
In a while my mother’ll get the records of Khan Sahab’s and play them, the sounds of the shehenaai wafting up the steps..
It’s kind of weird to see but my parents are in mourning of sorts.
Maybe it was the power of the man, the music and the talent which made them one…

I was looking for “different” videos in Yahoo Music and I remembered and whole bunch of stuff from the school days which had always made me goggle at the tv screen-
*fine young cannibals-she drives me crazy (video)
*cindy lauper- she makes anyone gawk.
*milli vanilli-for their weirdass dressing (non)sense of course.
*banarama-cruel summer (them 3 dames doing the “chakki-peesing” in prison)
*jane child-i dont wanna fall in love
    *sinead o’connor-emperor’s new clothes

But there were some good vocalists also, who aren’t around anymore. Either shuffled off the mortal plain or just stopped singing.
Luther Vandross, Wilson Phillips, Taylor Dane, Karyn White, Cathy Dennis, Jennifer Rush, Patti Labelle….the list goes on.

If ma belle Beyonce shook her protruding hinney a bit less and sang a bit more, she’d be a singer people would remember years on down the line.

Anyhow the great man was coming to tell me that I may have to finish off the rest of the year here instead of going to the boondocks!!!
    While it’s not a definite “thou-shalt-not-go”, it’s a very possible maybe.
Ah, getting up aaraam se for the next few months…bliss bliss bliss!

Don’t post jokes here but this one was too good to pass up.

Barbara Walters of 60 Minutes (USA) did a story on gender roles in Kabul several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked about ten paces behind their husbands. She returned to Kabul recently and observed that the men now walked several paces behind their wives.

Ms Walters approached one of the Afghani women and said. “This is marvellous. Can you tell the free world just what enabled women to achieve this reversal of roles?

    “Land mines,” said the woman.

  • air deccan is well-grounded

    17.08.2006

My cousin and her hubby left for M’bai early this morning , or so we thought.
By 5 in the morning my bro-in-law called me up and said the flight was postponed till afternoon and they were coming back to ourplace.
They came back with stories of how the Air Deccan people had only dropped the bomb about the flight at the last moment and were not volunteering any other info about what went wrong and how long it might take to fix it. And on top of it all, the AD people got all huffy when the customers began to get irritated. So the people did what the Indian junta does best- they broke the glass, they smashed a computer and pretty soon ETv news arrived on the scene to film the proceedings. Seeing them the guards, who had till then been part of the crowd, suddenly sprung to action and broke up the ruckus.
Nothing like a good rampage to kickstart the day, eh wot?

    16.08.2006

Apparently is it considered a great punya if you offer pooja to Lord Shiva during the Shravan maasam and especially if it is at one of the Jyotirlings. And apparently yours truly is now due for some heavy duty divine blessings because she went and did the above-mentioned thing.
Totally unknowingly of course. I mean I knew it was a good time to go and do the pooja but the Jyotirling and Shraavan maasam thingie had escaped me entirely. It just happened to coincide with the 15th August holiday at work.

There are more things which bear looking into it seems, regarding this entire divine matter. For the past many years I’ve been looking for a shiv ling. I don’t worship at all! But somehow it seemed right (?) that I have a shiv ling with me to keep. This time around when the entire gang of relatives were wandering around the temple , the gentleman who had arranged for the abhishekam was talking to me and when I mentioned I was looking to buy a shiv ling, had been for sometime, he asked which month I was born in. The English dates naturally popped out first, but when he wanted to know the Hindu calendar dates I told him it was Chaitra maasam. Apparently Shivji has a strong connection with both Shraavan and Chaitra both. Don’t ask me why though.

So he seemed happy, divinity was guiding my hands throughout the years. And me an agnostic to boot!
But the entire trip somehow seemed contrived. The head priest barking out mantras like a runaway train, unctuous younger priests practically guiding your hand while the kumkum abhishekems are done and the way that the masses are practically herded near the sanctum sactorum and then shoved out of the way for the next bunch was kind of pathetic. I’m sure Baba Jatadhari never gave an edict saying that’s how his devotees were to view him.

But the place by itself was quite pretty. The Krishna river was in full flow and the waters of the dam created huge mists for miles around and we all mistook the water for rain until we crossed the dam and saw the clouds of water rising up from the reservoir.

There’s another interesting spot, Patal Ganga. It’s not a ganga at all but very much still the krishna. You have to traverse around 1500 steps and get to the spot where there’s yet another shiv ling in the waters. This gets hidden when there’s excess rains and people just make the journey to get some paavan pani to take home. Never mind it’s turbid and people bathing in it may have left it slightly less paavan than anticipated :o)

So I’m off to the office in a little bit. With aching leg muscles (patal journey, remember?) and a glow of divinity around me.
Btw, I found a nice shiv ling this time around. Just have to figure out what to do with Ye old ascetic now.

it was the whole vision of childhood’s katti and making up later that made me smile.

  • whatta week!!

    12.08.2006

Ever have one of those weeks (of course you have!) where you get into work all pepped up and by lunch time realised that you’ve bitten off more than you can chew?
Well this week was all that and more. There was the usual routine in the office, mom had errands at home that needed to be done, I had taken on some freelance work thinking that I could do it, and then the guests arrived. Oh, did I mention that a friend is also getting married and there are things to attend related to that as well?
When I unloaded this heap of fatigue-inducing stuff onto a close friend, he (the dear he is) turned on me and ticked me off and finally put the phone down in a huff! And his huff continued for another day. I mean, c’,mon on! Who is the stressed out, coffee-gurgling person here? You or me.
But as I discovered, concern comes in many ways. The same friend came with me for one of the assignments I had taken on. Although he firmly refused to let me use him as a pillow during transit. And my mother had gone a step further and kept the nice (but demanding) relations at bay and had laid out everything I’d need for the wedding tomorrow, on my bed and left me plenty of camomile tea.
    AH! Bliss.
Thank goodness for mothers (and the friends who tick you off for your own good). The galactic ameba did something right when He/ She/ It fashioned them.

Now I will wait till the sight-seeing group returns. Do my pranaams, hugs, hi’s and gobble up dinner and run to my bed as if it’s the Last Siesta :o)
