The friend’s husband has been cleared in toto by the khakis of the country.
I think he’ll punish himself more in the days to come for his lack of foresight but all’s well that ends well.

Y’day evening I went to a deli-cum-bakery with a friend and we were wondering what to chomp on when the officious waiter came over. The brief interaction with him is as follows-
Me- what is this?
Friend-looks like a quiche. Is this a quiche?
Waiter- Umm, no Sir, it’s pie.
M-hmm, those wedges look nice, wanna try some.
F- they look more like pies to me. i wouldnt mind the quiche-thing.
M-what’s in these erm…pies?
W-(pointing to the same thing each time) that’s chicken, that’s lamb, that’s veg.
M-hmm, let’s try this again….WHAT IS THE FILLING IN THESE THINGS?
W-Ma’am, it’s P-I-E.We opted for a pineapple pastry.

Originally uploaded by ag80.This is the epitome of ultimate penury! me and 2 of my friends were working for TISS (they pay peanuts!!!) and we were doing a project in Gujarat. The boss lady went incommunicado in Papua New Guinea, the rains lashed Baroda and our money ran out and light went out too.
This is the way the laundry was done and pretty much how we lived for those few weeks.
Damn it was fun! -

Today two major things happened. Both were unexpected. Well one was in the offing but it wasnt sure if it’d come off just right and the other was (still is) an out&out shock!
The first one is the culmination of many months of tanta and deliberation and quite a bit of taam-jhaam. But it’s absolutely a restorative development and it’s one of the reasons i’ll still have a partial bounce in my step tomorrow.
The other is the one which will occupy centerstage for sometime to come. A close friend’s husband has a stationery business and also a dealership for SIM cards.
Some guy came into his shop today and bought a SIM card and said he was going into the xerox place next door to get a copy of his ID. The man vamoosed and in this time the card had been activated. The man clearly had nefarious intentions in mind because no sooner did he get the card in hand that he started to call various people and extorting huge sums of money. The rest of the story is still vague to me but the upshot of it is this
-the guy escaped
-the phone was found
-the SIM was traced back to the shop
-my friend’s husband arrested &taken for interrogation
-talk of his being cited as an accomplice of the actual guy
-non-bailable warrants being issued for him tomorrow.
-talk of possibility of POTA coming into the picture from reliable inside sources.
-my friend being devastated. The friend’s hubby, let’s call him M. He’s the most innocuous person around for miles and the most non-interferring. His only mistake here was not being alert enough or not getting the SIM deactivated when he realised that the guy had fled. But whatever his cognitive processes at that time, this much is certain, there is an entire family who’ll spend a sleepless night on tenderhooks and many others like me who’re still up wondering at how quick life can seem to capsize.
Am seriously brainfucked right now. -
The Loretto Convent fracas in Lucknow made me irritated beyond words! I felt like taking an axe (not really but it makes me sound pissed off) to both the BJP and the convent authorities.
In my Univ days I used to see the ‘youth’ leaders canvassing about MSU for votes. That they were YEARS ahead of us in age and that others their age had school-going kids didnt’t amount to squat. And although they weren’t goondas, they had all the resources at their disposal. Honestly, is that things are supposed to be, even in a world not being viewed by rose-tinted glasses?
I’ve hated (still do) the ABVP with a passion. They’re destructive, they’re zealots although Lord only knows their causes! and I cant’ honestly site one source which will claim authentically that they have actually done some good, somewhere. Why do they still exist then? Because we live in the twilight zone.Coming to the brides of Jesus! There are layers to them and no matter how nice evangelism is steeped in deep. I’ve gone to mostly convents throughout my scholastic life and I still hold that convents impart a kind of education which many instituions cannot emulate. The kind of discipline and fun (that’s right) that is to be had there isn’t available everywhere. But every Moral Science class would basically be a front for promoting the Bible and the Holy Trinity. I’ve gone to chapels on my own and visited more churches than temples or gurudwaras and I’m not attributing it to the nuns who’ve taught me in school. But they do get persistently nagging and the brainwashing is just a distance away, all you have to do is reach out and it comes gushing forth to embrace you.
When the convent authorities know that they cater to students from different faiths, why did they need to expose ALL the students to a spiritual state in which they could experience Jesus? Navratri’s coming up, why not summon forth Durga or some Islamic prophet for that matter?Bottom line, keep the religious indoctrination and dogma out of educational institutions unless its a theology class and don’t test the waters all that much unless you’re a good swimmer. The school authorities may have called for a bandh in righeous indignation but they sure burnt their fingers with this particular episode. Now we’ll just wait and watch if faith healing can do an OBLIVIATE! of sorts and make them forget why certain things should not be left solely upto Divine Intervention, and where commonsense should prevail.

I’ve not gone to many concerts (classical music not included) and I was doubly enthu about the one last night becoz it was the 1st one in Hyderabad and this is how it was-
Chaotic, PYTs (who were DUMB), jocks and wannabes of all types. But it was fun in it’s own way. I was with a bunch of guys who were alumnis of the college where the concert was being held and they were deep into nostalgia mode. I was collecting material on the variety of namoonas on display to mimic at a later date.
The line-up was impressive considering they brought in semi to actual heavyweights in the current indian music scene.
DJ Suketu, Karunya and JAL. Also on display was a considerable wealth of extremely talented local rockers who really brought down the house!
I wish more events of this sort would take place in Hyd’bad from now onwards. Each time someone halfway decent comes to perform it’s only at Delhi, Bombay or Bangalore.
We have no dearth of enthupatakis in the Biriyani City :o) -
