    27.05.2006

a good samaritan ( yes they do exist) was good enough to gimme a spooky movie when i was going to home alone this weekend. anyhow, i think the witching hour awaits me and the movie. till then i thought i’d get back to poetry.
during a chat session today i got carried back to the eng litt classes of my grads.
kept sifting through stuff online and found some old familiar faces and some new ones.
    here’s one a like quite a bit-

    Variations On The Word Love

    <!–

Get the byline – contains details about author and modification date.

    –>

This is a word we use to plug
holes with. It’s the right size for those warm
blanks in speech, for those red heart-
shaped vacancies on the page that look nothing
    like real hearts. Add lace
    and you can sell
it. We insert it also in the one empty
    space on the printed form
that comes with no instructions. There are whole
magazines with not much in them
but the word love, you can
rub it all over your body and you
can cook with it too. How do we know
it isn’t what goes on at the cool
    debaucheries of slugs under damp
pieces of cardboard? As for the weed-
seedlings nosing their tough snouts up
among the lettuces, they shout it.
Love! Love! sing the soldiers, raising
    their glittering knives in salute.

    Then there’s the two
    of us. This word
is far too short for us, it has only
    four letters, too sparse
    to fill those deep bare
    vacuums between the stars
that press on us with their deafness.
It’s not love we don’t wish
to fall into, but that fear.
this word is not enough but it will
have to do. It’s a single
    vowel in this metallic
    silence, a mouth that says
O again and again in wonder
and pain, a breath, a finger
grip on a cliffside. You can
    hold on or let go.

    Margaret Atwood

  • wetting the baby’s head…

    27.05.2006

does NOT, mean baptism. it’s generally means to go out and get roaringly drunk all in the name of having been blessed with an individual who’ll be a huge financial drain on you for the next 20 years, 18 if you play your cards right.
anyhow, the new nephew (who from all reports sounds to be what we call a bichchhoo) was reason enough for me to turn a bit firang and indulge myself a wee bit o’dram…
the bartender at mainland china ( I just ADORE the place!! go people go!!!) mixed this drink for me and it was light enough for me not to end up dancing on the table and had just enough voddy to give a nice fuzzy people…
anyhow for those interested, this is how one makes it..

Using the handle of a wooden spoon, crush and mash

This is a summer drink to appreciate before eating.
Decorate the glass with a slice of lime. Great with Brazilian barbecues.

  • the rain in spain….

    25.05.2006

got stuck in the rain after a long long time. unexpected downpour too, the monsoons are a few days early. but i’m not complaining.
i will however thoroughly complain tomorrow coz the new temp campus will be a huge mud puddle and i’ll be walking around my salwar hiked upto my knees in a typical bong fashion!!
a few things which set bongs apart from others-

-hiked up clothes regardless of rain/puddles/dirt
-a sad face and an attitude like atlas, often for no earthly reason.
-FISH!!! my friend (another bong) often says that we’ll all sprout scales in a lil while more.
    -hypochondriasis-it speaks for itself.
-pontificating for the world at large even if no one’s listening.
    -lecturing from the pulpit.
-making decisions which will change their lives based on whether mohan bagan/east bengal wins/loses
    -scatology!!!!

  • I”M an AUNT!!!!

    25.05.2006

a very nice but dorky, gangly and kinda wallflowery-type of cousin of mine had a baby boy y’day. this guy was someone who we’d all despaired was NEVER going to get married,be able to sire a kid ( believe me he did not seem capable) and generally go riding off into the sunset at the end of the story.
anyhow, he got married to a woman WAY more forceful and with LOTS more personality than him and i used to wonder if marriage has actually made a difference in him at all and whether that would be perceivable or not. so yesterday when he called me up with the good tidings i didnt know initially who was calling-the voice was confident, forceful and nicely deep&rumbling. he announced with perfect aplomb that he was a father now, of a son no less (that apparently proves beyond a shadow of doubt that yes, HE is a MAN!!!) and i was an aunt!!!
so,after duly asking about the baby’s weight and all that jazz i went off to shop for the infant. muh dikhaayi being what it is and he being my first bhateeja i wanted to get him good stuff. hit a nice up market baby shop and asked for kids’ stuff for a few days old bachchoo. THEY HAD AMAZING STUFF!!! i kept picking out stuff and then i remembered it wasnt for me, it was for le bhanje :o(
we seriously missed out on good stuff back in the 80’s.

after dinner we all were talking about this cuz of mine and it was almost laughable to see how outright relieved my parents were. my mom mentioned a british sitcom which was aired in the late 90’s called “some mothers do have ’em” and how my cuz had always seemed to be the one the main character had been modelled on. the bulbs went on immediately and my dad and i chipped in with our exclamations of how we’d always thought the same thing but it never seemed polite to voice it out coz the guy on TV was way too lalloo…familial loyalty being what it is :o)
now i just have to ensure the kid turns out better…

  • the lovely rocky terrain…

    22.05.2006

is what we had to face upto when we went in for the classes today to the temp campus.
students glowering, parents muttering threats ( and some profanities too methinks) and faculty looking for ways to escape.
then someone had a brilliant idea of saying to a particularly irate parent, with the most untidy mush i’ve ever seen in my life, that i was a bong- and off we went!
he jabbered, and blabbered and made mamta banerjee look meek, mild and well-mannered. all the while his daughter was doing the whole nain-matakka act with a guy with the lowest jeans and no ass i’ve  ever seen.
am getting to see a lot arent i?
anyhow, people got pacified, hugs and kisses were exchanged and the mata-pita left their offsprings to the care of the jungle out there and left for home.
i swear there was a huge SIGH of relief-mostly from their non-upset children who were only too agog to start playing adam and eve under the greenwood tree
    ;o)

  • dekho…magar pyaar se…

    21.05.2006

is what the photographer probably meant to say with all his wild wildmill hand movements. but instead he told me “madam please hold your eyelids”. i was looking at him with my well-aimed supercilious look ( complete with one eyebrow raised and lip curling in perfect half-sneer) when he said i was blinking too much. arrey raam! how will i get the nazaakat in my photos unless i have the eyelashes fluttering wildly?!
i’d been bugging my dad for family portraits for a long while now and he chose this particular sunday of all days when i came back from work ( yes people, the dark days are upon me again) all harried and found the photoman waiting there with all his photo gear asking if i wanted to pose near the rose bushes or look up as if i’d been startled out of a daydream. he’s been on my hit list since then.

the campus is finally looking like a campus now with students teeming in from all over india, with special emphasis from WB and punju land. there were harried but eager to prove their intellect bongs and mastikhor punju and helloji madam-wala sards! the parents were another kettle of fish altogether!
once i have my own practice i’m going to treat only the parents who have children who are still studying. they’re a breed onto themselves. i’ll mint moolah!!! evil laffter booming!!!!!

  • good week.

    20.05.2006

the lil sard from next door is mimicking the kitten mewing in the garbage heap. the competition’s heating up and the kid’s going at it whole hog!!!

the pater returned jetlagged after a busy tour of nyc and boston but i got an ipod shuffler out of it so YEAH!!!!

a benevolent friend gave me a link where i can download ebooks for free. i have read most of them but wodehouse!!! i’ll risk the copyright violation also. he did say even the copyright ones where up for grabs. hmmm, this bears looking into.

the brats aka new batch of students started to arrive from today. they were a pretty good kind, chilled out and eager’n’fresh of the press as it were. their parents were another ballgame altogether! i rue the day i was cast into the typical bong “facecut”. i was asked about where rice is available among other things ( the main one being- MERE BACHCHE KA DHYAAN RAKHNA MAA).

will start taking classes from monday onwards…this reminds me, BUY HEELS!!!

  • hey prabhu! where art thou?

    18.05.2006

got a new music system installed in the car today and the blaupunkt dealers were nice enough to throw in 2 cds gratis.
the cds themselves are an entirely differently kettle of fish!!
they actually remixed reshammiya with black-eyed peas?!!!! WTF??!!!!
and some songs of sallu with some reggae beats. i think this is gonna end up causing an accident else the pater will jump out in frustration and take his chances with the mad hyd’badi traffic.
really! asthetics kis chidhiya ka naam hai inn bandon ko maloom bhi nahi hai yaar!

  • da vinci code or no da vinci code?

    18.05.2006

i have an awful sore throat and people are taking advantage of my diminished eloquence ( hee hee) to say a whole lotta stuff which i’d normally fight tooth’n’nail against!

pr dasmunshi is yet to decided whether the Da Vinci code will get the green light in india or not. what a load of crap!!! 1/2 the christians in india hadnt even read the book before such a ruckus was raised about it. i wonder if it’s the satanic verses all over again?

had wanted to see the movie for many reasons-a) wud tom hanks be able to carry of the role of langdon or not. personally i think that mark harmon would have been better. he may not be in hanks’ league name wise but is an extremely competent actor.

b)if they would be able to recreate the hold the book’s been able to get on the public’s mind and thought processes.

but who knows, we may never know the answer to that unless the govt decides to let the people think for themselves and release the movie with minimum cuts. doing things for the “greater good” sure means jootey khaana from a section of the junta all the time!
