• the lady who works for us is a muslim. she’s been abandoned by her hubby (who is a cousin of her’s) to go marry some other woman and raise a bunch of kids with her. oh, did i mention this is after he had 5 kids with our lady.
anyhow,he’s totally absented himself from the lives of her and their children for the past many years. so on this poor woman falls the duty of getting the daughters married and doing the “right” things by her kids aka duniyadaari, dowry and all that jazz.
around a year ago she got her eldest daughter (all of 18) married to her own elder sister’s son. this was done as helpful relatives advised her she could forgo giving a dowry and her daughter would effectively be going to a second mother’s house as ma=maasi.

today she came in crying and told ma that her nephew/son-in-law’s been beating her daughter for not getting adequate dowry and ergo lowering his status in the kind of esteemed society they live in. and when our lady approached her sister to intervene, the lady turned on her and said,”mard insaan hai..haath toh uthaayega hi aur tuney kuchh khaas diya bhi toh nahin thaa”.
this poor woman wandered through our house in a daze today and quite understandbly could not do any work at all. finally after a lot of consultations she’s decided to bring her daughter home along with the infant granddaughter.
honestly, it’s getting tougher day by day to draw the line. there can be such malicious people around at times that i feel to hell with giving those ch**tiyas another chance! just kick ’em in the nuts hard and leave!!! and as for the chudail saas/mausi…she can just go stand in front of a running train.
what’s to become of them now? and nothing against the community because the socio-economic strata they belong to basically doesnt believe in educating the girl child much- the young girl is saddled with an infant and no skills to speak of. going out to work is unthinkable for her.
f***ing bhadva of a pati of hers!!

  • blotchy me!!

eeeks! was what i uttered when i saw myself in the mirror.
normally that doesnt happen. am practically narcissus’ sis on many days, truth be told.
anyhoo, had a meeting with a guy in 5 mins and the mirror showed me as blotch-infested and lips looked grey and hair all dull&discolored!
was about to go to the doctor for an assessment for “chickun-gunya” when i a colleague came in and said i was looking nice. and then it hit me, the lights were all wrong coz this usually dressed to the nines woman looked like she was wearing a burlap sack and her face was at best slaty in color.
ran down to the caretakers and made them change the bulb. when they asked what they were gonna do with now-redundant one, i said put it in the mens’ room. wont they get a surprise when they start to check out their…..ah, let’s leave it at that!
about the chickun gunya. had a hearty laff over it. coz it turns out that the gunya part is a mispronunciation of the word guinea. and all this time i kept thinking it was a gulti term for the disease! the doc went to the extent of telling me about gunya pigs and papua new gunya and all that jazz.

  • got up aaram se today coz i dint have to catch the early morning bus.
came to work with ya ali blaring in the car.
got down only to find 5 colleagues who’d missed the bus and dint know when the next one would come around. their visibly brightened faces told me that yes indeedy! misery lurves company and solicits it too!
on being told yours truly would be staying put and not going on the daily tirth yatra to the boondocks, their expressions ranged from shocked in grief,J and sly looks. and i cudda sworn there were some teeth gnashing while i left them there and headed up the steps.

so here i am,the 3rd sem kids about to descend at any moment and i’ll be putting on my no-nonsense and i know it all looks and hoping that they’ll buy it!

  • back on track…

-with the kinds of ups&downs that had been happening of late, this weekend came as a breath (read gust) of fresh air.
-caught up with a good friend after a loong time and we kinda started to put wonky stuff in our relationship right. it’s still kinda wobbly but not prostrated so hurrah!!
-have been told definitely by the powers that be that i will not have to travel to the jungles of s’pally for this sem atleast and will have to take classes and labs for the seniors at a location very conveniently located near the ol’ homestead and other places of debauchery!!
-downloaded a NOICE pic of brandon routh (yeah i know, schoolgirl crush and all that jazz) and it’s got a total monalisa thing going for it. no matter which part of my room i move to, brandon keeps looking at me with that look and it’s quite a “look” if you know what i mean…
speaking of the ol’ gal (mrs.lisa), the movie surrounding her creator is a total and complete DUD! someone from k’la sent me a cd…bhagwan jaaney kahan se copy kiya tha…but the bad print was the only good thing in the movie. tom hanks is WOODEN to the extent he can portray an entire redwood forest and ms.tatou is french with a vengeance but la femme is tres dull and listeless and seems so woolly-headed you wonder how she studies for the part of being a cryptologist.
ian, ian, ian…baby you shudda lived out the rest of your life resting on your laurels playing gandalf….he cant even do the role of a snooty brit guy for crying out loud!!
rated this movie an ‘all digits down”!!
you know, i realised that today’s been so chipper-inducing because man(&woman) and nature came together to create the perfect sawaan ki ghata and the kind of camaraderie that seldom happens and when it does, it kind of lasts for the entire duration of the day and kind of gives impetus to everything that comes into it’s ambit.
am i happy…yeah…good start to the grind ahead i guess

  • wokay! where do i begin?
got up (read-got pushed outta bed).
went to work only there was NO work to be done per se…
herded the brats into the bus only to find they were going willingly and i was made redundant.
got caught by the big guy and he asked me to do dumb stuff like babysit them for a while longer..who knows how long that wudda been?
played hooky and got 2 others to run away with me too…
came down to central and saw SUPERMAAAAN!!!
after a long, long, really long time saw a first day-first show and that kinda made it all the more fun for me.
the new guy’s a dish!!!! he’s got that all-important home-grown, pure look. clean, wholesome and a nice cleft in his chin that makes you wanna….(censored)
anyhow, that apart the movie’s not hubba-hubba material at all. i’d honestly gone to see spacey and see if he’d be able to outdo gene hackman. he wasnt. but i still like him!
anyhow, kate bosworth as lois lane is a total mismatch coz she doesnt AT ALL have the “go-for-the-jugular” approach of a journalist and neither can she play a high-strung woman the way margot kidder used to.
technically better? yes. but that’s about it.
is the man gonna be able to make moolah and come back as superman returns yet again-quite possibly.
do i wanna take him to mom and later go into a khopcha with him? MOST definitely!

  • uff!!!

too many things to process, to many things to deal with and too much to implement all in one go.
one good news? stopped mom’s amarnath journey!! she’s too damn young to be going on the whole char-dham routine!! but seriously though why deliberately endanger your life just coz it’s fun and ardous to climb all the way up there to see a stalactite or a stalagmite!!

the students are finally being moved to the new campus!!! AMEEN. so we’re doing admin work and herding them into the buses with their baggages and their attitudes to boot.  and from monday onwards i’ll be travelling 40 kms one way to get to work…aiyyo guruvayyurappa!!

people who’re new to hyd’bad are being referred to yours truly coz it seems i have contacts. even if i dont and they call up at all times with “bon” (sister in bong), “didi”, “beta” and whatnots! all with their hands out to be tugged along while they make their way along the “mean” streets of hyd’bad…BAH!!!

friends who’re “happily married” are taking the trouble to call me up, mail and warn me off against the dangers of wedlock and i had to go through a terribly boring dinner last night wherein my single status was discussed at length and i think ppl might want to take up actions wherein the status gets changed at the earliest!!!
eeeks!!! need to sleep, need to hibernate actually…
where’s the valium when i need it?

  • cinnamoney

i have always been inclined to like stuff based on tactile or olfactory sensations. and today a pretty strong memory got evoked just by a smell.
a friend of mine recently gave me a pack of gum which has been lying in my handbag for a while now. i was in a state of flux when i met with him and had just thrust the gum in the bag and had forgotten all about it.
a colleague was rooting through my bag today for something to munch on before class and found the packet and opened it. a nice cinnamon smell wafted through the room and a very lucid kind of picture sprang up in front of my eyes of me with certain people, talking about certain things and somehow it was all connected by that thread of cinnamon….
btw, that same colleague dint close the flap on the packet and all the gum pieces were scattered in the bag and now i positively smell like a cinnamon factory and even the dough in wallet is giving off a nice apple-pie kinda smell…
at the risk of looking kooky,  i think i’ll sit in the last seat on the bus back home and sniff the wallet! :o)

  • had a jam-packed weekend after a long time and dint really miss the sleep i lost out on till monday dawned on me.
an old pal from college days is in the country now and saw her for the 1st time in 5 years and it was as if the years fell away instantly. while our catching up progressed it felt as if we regained some of those years. kaal ke thapede being what they are…

i dont know why women do it but we always go back to the men in our lives in our nostalgia-induced states and do a thorough dissection of the 5 W’s and then some!
my friend was one of the first one of us to get married and we’d (the rest of us who knew her well) had breathed sighs of relief that she had finally found some stability in life. she of the numerous dum-chhallas trailing behind her, the captivated mooney-eyed men who she somehow compelled to be nice to; had willingly settled for a grown-up (yes, they do exist in the male species) and accomplished man and the parents had also seen fit to bless the union and soon after off she went to yankee doodle land, life as she knew it, fell apart. only we dint know of it till recently.
over hors d’oeuvres and weirdass cocktails did the tale of her unravelling marriage come out, interspersed with “hey whatever happened to..”, “do you remember so&so…”.

this girl was known for her hyperactivity (2nd to my own) and everything that seemed to be bemused and lost and looking for an anchor was attributed by her name. it’s kinda like pulling a monica but in a nicer way :o)
so there we were, past midnight, on the swing looking out at hyd’bad sleeping in front of us and somewhere from the recesses of the night came out confessions, regrets, hopes, dreams, grievances advices that were doled out and secrets that still had to be kept for another few years till we met with another load of stuff to share and talk about.

i’ve always loved the idea of having a time capsule. having lived in so many places and been with so many types of people, it always seemed like the thing to do. having your life chronicled in front of you and getting a chance to go back to who you were, what made you tick and where you are now. dint get around to it finally…and now the packing boxes in the basement are chronicles or the various phases of my life and the photo archive that my mother religiously maintains just augments it.

we have an egroup of our class from the undergrads and everyone posts stuff that’s going on in their lives but somehow there’s a superficiality in it, only the good stuff that’s going on in our lives get shown to the others. nevermind that earlier when we used to cry, rant’n’rave it would be in front of the same classmates but now things are different. we have veneers that we have developed, nourished and cultivated since we left college and they’re always in the forefront when addressing the old mates. but masks have a way of slipping and when they do, it’s usually with a vengeance.
someone goes into clinical dep coz of the chudhail saas, someone gets smacked around by hubby dearest, someone gets into a marriage of convenience, someone sits at home letting the talents get atrophied coz the dependent visa status is getting extended, someone makes plans for marriage only to see them dissapate and others with their ruts, routine and some kind of unhappiness which has to be contained from the world at all cost!
doesnt mean that our lives are festering and we’re all angst-ridden. no! but just not as happy as we’d like to have been, the way we normally tend to portray to all those who saw us dreaming the very same dreams we havent been able to achieve, i guess.
but some of us have done extremely well! and have followed their hearts&minds in a near-perfect combo and are actually happy.
my friend and i were reflecting that those who had setbacks in their professional lives had GREAT personal lives and vice versa. Fate’s (??) way of restoring some kind of equilibirum i guess.
catching up with friends is an indescribably great feeling but it leaves you with much to contend with at the end of the day…

  • whatta spaz!!

    lord i feel old!
i got this faltoo mail on yahoo with the subject line-hilary poses..
and i thot it was the aspiring prez of US and it turned out to be miss.duff…
